"Setsubun"originally means division of seasons. It is used to mark the end of spring, summer, autumn and winter. However "setsubun" has now come to mean the day before the first day of spring only in particular. It occurs on February 3rd this year.
On this day, in a custom called "mame-maki", people throw and scatter soy beans in the evening in order to drive the evil spirits away from them.

In Heikenji and Wakamiya shirine, Mamemakishiki, a bean-scattering ceremony will be conducted.

It makes for an impressive sight.

The ceremony starts with the shout “Fuku-wa-uchi” (In with fortune) and guests (who have registered) throw the fortune beans (roasted soybeans) from the stage simultaneously. Visitors also can catch them!

Thousands of people gathers and try to cacth beans!

After getting beans, eat the exact number of beans as your age. This will bring you a year full of good health.
